Food and Wine
Adelaide is truly the food and wine capital of Australia. Whether it’s visiting one of our world-class wine regions, browsing through the Adelaide Central Market, or dining out in one of our many restaurants, Adelaide offers a little bit of everything for lovers of great food and wine.
Adelaide’s rich, vibrant food and wine culture means we have more restaurants and cafes per capita than any other city in Australia. And compared with the eastern seaboard capitals – our prices are lower.
We have entire streets devoted to fine food. Rundle Street, Gouger Street and Melbourne Street are lined with restaurants and cafes offering cuisine from all corners of the earth, resulting in the ultimate dining experience.
And with good food comes good wine, so it’s only natural that we have both in abundance!
Today, South Australia is rightly known around the world as ‘Australia’s Wine State’, producing fresh and distinctive regional wines that continue to impress around the globe, and not surprisingly, wine is the state’s second biggest export item.
To the south of Adelaide the sweeping vineyards of McLaren Vale meet the ocean to create some of the most beautiful views in South Australia…not to mention the world-class wines that come from this region. To the north of the city the vast plains of the Barossa Valley stretch for as far as the eye can see. The Barossa Valley has become a major tourist destination in South Australia where guests can stroll through the many little towns, eat fantastic food and sample some of the most famous wines in the world. Other wine growing and wine making regions that are recognised internationally include the Coonawarra, Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills.
Adelaide is also the home of iconic brands including Coopers beer, Haighs chocolate, Farmers Union iced coffee, FruChocs and Penfolds wine - the creator one of the most sought after wines in the world, Grange Hermitage.
